Job Summary: The City of Hays Fire Department is seeking dedicated and courageous individuals to join our team as Firefighters. This vital role involves a broad range of responsibilities crucial to public safety and emergency response within the Hays community. Firefighters are expected to be hands-on, willing to learn, and capable of performing demanding physical and mental tasks under pressure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fire Suppression & Rescue: Actively engage in suppressing fires and rescuing individuals from dangerous situations.

  • Fire Prevention & Education: Participate in and conduct fire prevention activities and public education initiatives to promote safety within the community.

  • Technical Training: Train regularly on various specialized emergency response techniques, including Technical Rescue, Wildland Firefighting, and other relevant disciplines.

  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to emergencies, even when off-duty, to ensure continuous coverage and support for critical incidents.

Requirements:

  • Work Ethic: Willingness to learn, work hard, and be hands-on in a dynamic environment.

  • Certifications: Ability to obtain EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician - Basic) and Firefighter I Certification. (Training costs paid by the Hays Fire Department - HFD).

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.

  • Literacy & Comprehension: Ability to read and interpret maps and reports effectively.

  • Availability: Must be able to work shift work, including weekends and holidays. (Typical schedule involves 24 hours on, 48 hours off).
