Part-Time Community Service Officer
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Police Sergeant, the Community Service Officer is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position is a civilian, non-sworn employee of the Police Department that works in coordination with the patrol division performing regular assigned duties under direction of the on-duty shift supervisor enforcing laws and codes regarding animals, patrolling designated areas, responding to radio calls from Dispatch and apprehending, capturing and transporting stray animals within the City of Hays. Performs limited law enforcement duties, support services, animal control duties, and community servicesfor the Police Department. This employee interacts with the public on a daily basis and should possess excellent public relation and communication skills. This position is required to work shifts which may include days, nights, or a mixture of both as well as holidays and weekends.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Performs code enforcement duties;
• Performs traffic direction and control duties;
• Performs animal control duties including but not limited to: investigate reports of animal abuse, cruelty, and bites; education of residents concerning animal regulations, guidelines and service; and capture and transports domestic and wild animals;
• Processes recovered property;
• Assist with funeral escorts;
• Assist with crowd control for parades and other civic events;
• Respond to non-criminal citizen requests for service;
• Perform crime prevention duties;
• Enforces local ordinances, including but not limited to water violations;
• Participates in required training and educational sessions;
• Provide medical assistance to injured and ill persons to the extent which they are trained;
• Identifies issues within the city, including but not limited to traffic signs and signals not functioning properly, potholes, and code violations;
• Investigates vehicle accidents;
• Process and inspect UTV’s being registered with the City of Hays;
• Oversees the Part Time Community Service Officer program including training, limited supervision, and delegating duties;
• Prepares and completes reports and records;
• Inspects law enforcement equipment;
• Testifies in court as needed;
• Assist with transports and security details;
• Assist with training and recruitment events.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
• Assists other departments as the need arises;
• Completes minor maintenance to departmental vehicles;
• Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
